Songs for a Sad Heart?

  • We had to put one of our dogs to sleep today (Saturday). This has been extremely difficult for me and my wife, as it usually is in these situations. We have had the dogs for fourteen years and they like children to us.

Like most people, when I am sad I often turn to music for comfort and have made compilations of sad or melancholic songs in the past to listen to. It seems to help to listen to sad music when I am sad; somehow it makes me feel less alone. Anyway, I was looking for suggestions from people of individual songs that mean a lot to you or that you think would be good listening during a time like this. The songs don't have to be outright downers themselves so long as they create the right mood or feeling. I'm not looking for uplifting music--I need to wallow for a while. Some of the songs I have listened to in the past include:

Moments of Pleasure - Kate Bush
Song to the Siren - This Mortal Coil
Into My Arms - Nick Cave
    Different Stars - Trespassers William
    Asleep - The Smiths
(Love Is A) Blind Ambition - Concrete Blonde
Love Is Stronger Than Death - The The
Naked As We Came - Iron & Wine
Blues for the Unencouraged - Corina Repp

Thanks for any additional suggestions. I'm open to anything and any genre so long as it is melancholy, although meaningful lyrics are a plus.

Attached is a picture taken last year, in case you're curious.

  • Very sorry about your dog, antiphon.

La dispute - Remix by The third eye foundation
    Lost -The third eye foundation

  • Sorry for your loss. Of many songs fitting such criteria I suggest:

    Comets - Piano Magic

  • Hi anriphon, one more sorry about your loss.
I really love almost everything from yann tiersen but try with monochrome, it's beautiful.
I love a lot of osts as well, the music of eternity and a day is one of the saddest songs i've ever heard, by Eleni karaindrou.
Sigur ros is also great to help you get it out, happipolla for example can make me cry even when i'm happy ;)
    Hope you like them

  • Hey, antiphon! Sorry about your dog. Try [[|Diamons in your hands]] by Neutral - one of my favorite in this kind.

  • Jo Hamilton
Think of Me - Radio edit

  • Thanks everyone. I appreciate the sympathy and the suggestions. Will start hunting for tracks now. This will offer a distraction and a focus for the time being. Something to do other than think.

The dog's name? Officially: Hocus Pocus, but we called her Pokey.

  • oh no! Fourteen is a good age, though. My dog of 15 years passed away a couple years ago, and is very difficult indeed. I grew up with that dog.

Listen to Mono's album, Hymn to the Immortal Wind. It will bring you through a range of emotions, all related to lonesomeness.

  • I'm sorry to hear about your dog, I know how hard it is.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy has plenty of beautiful, melancholy songs.

  • Hammock - I can allmost see you (:

  • sorry for your loss, antiphon. i know the feeling. whenever i think loss i always think about peter gabriel's "here comes the sun".

  • Listening to leonard cohen as i read this thread.

  • I've always liked 'it can't rain all the time' by Jane siberry...

  • @antiphon - sorry about your loss.

as a this mortal coil fan you should check out the hope blister's lp (ivo and deirdre rutkowski)- very melancholy

@marto - +1 for piano magic - good to know there are other fans in the monome community

  • Thanks again to everyone for the suggestions. It has taken me out of my musical rut and helped quite a bit. I'm working on getting many of these songs in mp3 form for a new personal playlist.

@knecht: I have the Hope Blister album; very good (and sad) stuff. From there I was led to Heidi Berry, Pale Saints and David Sylvian--also very good.

  • I think anyone who has ever had a pet is with you.

the first song which pops into my head is

    Santana - Samba Pa Ti

I'm intimately convinced it is a song meant for a beloved one gone

  • sorry man.

try bon iver - The Wolves (Act I and II)

or the whole album. pretty good.

  • Been meaning to post but I have no songs to offer.

Just wanted to pay my condolences.
