    SSSSSSSSSSSSSS
    OOOOOOOOOOOO
    NNNNNNNNNNNNNN
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    you did it

  • thanks dudes...!
    so, i gotta say...
getting used to this beast has taken a while...
but i'm SERIOUSLY noticing the differences...
the tehn built unit is like 8000000 times more sturdy then my lunchboxes...
although, i still occasionally get ghost presses... this 256 is an amazing upgrade...
i actually had to sit down and draw myself maps for a few nights before i got to a point of attempting to play it...
but i got myself a dope ableton MIDI template... and it's all working lovely!
the smaller buttons are actually a bit more hand sized...
and all in all easier than the 40h at this point....
on top of that, im using pages so i got a step sequencer and pattern recorders too...
all working together, it's brought the complexity of things to a great spot!

@phortran... holler with your paypal son!.... i needta make a donation!
    holler homies!

  • hey awesome! If i can pick your brain, are you still running midi messages to trigger clips, and if so, how many tracks are you running there? Boggles the mind...

and i hear you on the Phortran love. Pages is central to the monome experience, for sure!

  • @lokey
    yupyup
im using the pages midi triggers page...
firing audio clips in ableton via MIDI..
all in all, i have 2 drum tracks, 1 bass and 4 melodies...
there is also 2 tracks separate for the step sequencer...
i just have rows in the sequencer firing audio clips as well...
basically each song has an A section and B section...
then the rest of the monome is remixed versions of those...
i have a small 4x8 section of "mlr" type of thing...
a loud distorted version of things...
    ect ect...
    remix the remixes remix...
on the top 4 x 16 is buffer efx...
1 for the drum channel and 1 for the melodic content....
    sting!

  • how much preparation goes into making one song and how long does it take? it looks like you planned each and every one of your presses. it's pretty incredible.

  • @iamgoldman
so, i'd say that around 15-20 hours each track..
that said, some go real quick.... some need a lot of love...
    this record is weird though...
the work load got much bigger (having 4 times the buttons)
but i only had a month and a half to compose it all...
got to book 3 free days at hyde st studio to mix everything....
but the only time available was novemeber 4th...
so it was a wicked crunch...!
in the end, it was kind of making songs without thinking about it..
just letting it happen, so i could finish in time...
it was a weird, tiring and kind of awesome way to work...
    it is what it is!
    im stoked on it all!
    as for planning button presses....
that just kind of happens too!
    i dunno

  • @edison
i'm glad pages is working for you! did you end up using that midi fingers groovy page or just the regular midi triggers page?

    @lokey
    thanks for all your support!

  • love it! so hard-hitting. instrumental mip-mop.

  • AAAAAA++++++ WOULD WATCH AGAIN!!!11.

Seriously though, dope-tastic! One thing I've been struggling with lately is trying to work with glitch effects. How do you keep em so tightly synced to the beat? Are they locked to the grid in ableton? Is it up to you to stay on beat so that your effects, in turn, also stay on beat? I'm just wondering if there are quirks that you come across that I just have to learn to accept when working with live effects.

  • that was insane, how long have you been practicing to be able to do that?

  • West Coast champ for a reason...

  • @phortran
so, i ended up using the regular triggers page....
the groovy page was sending MIDIon wrong channels...
as in, i would push a button and the led would light in a different quadrant of the 256...
i was trying to mess with it a bit...
and then i realized if you just send all the midi info on your clock track.. it works!
anyways.... since then, the program has been flawless!
    shit is soooooo sick...

    @gohmn
    this was an interesting thing....
in my last set up, i would just send MIDI note info to stutteredit....
but the 256 midi presses were working as toggles...
couldn't have that going on! haha
so, i made 1bar midi clips... assigned them to gate and loop and sent the outs to stutteredit...(for melody)
and then another track doing the same sending to the finger for drums
    so they are 16th quantized...
and in sync with the beat...
    but, they are only monophonic...
so i stacked a midi chord thing on the finger channel... to trigger more than 1 effect at once....

    @vestras
hm, well ive been working on the 40h for 3-4 years... and the 256 for almost 2 months...
    erry dayyy hoss!
    sting!

  • @edison

oops, sorry to hear about the bug in that. i have a 256, if you're still interested i'd be happy to work out the right midi notes/channels/etc for each button. shoot me an email: dinchak at gmail. then you get the awesome dedicated pattern recorder buttons which i've been making a lot of use of in my live setup--really great idea there.

glad you've got it going though!

  • *sigh* i'm gonna miss the lunchbox in your vids from now =)

just kidding, this is totally awusome!
