new app: Daemon

  • Daemon is an app that combines five step sequencers with tools for advanced harmonic control. It has a simple sine wave sound engine but can also be used in MIDI mode or a combination of the two. Each sequencer features independent tempo and the ability to sync to rewire.

Daemon was created to allow greater control over more traditional harmony and to let the user switch between chords with the press of a single button. Kind of like a customizable omnichord controlled by step sequencers...sort of.....

    A full documentation is included.

I took a MAX class earlier this year so this is my first serious app. This means that anyone who dares open it up is going to find many unortodox patching solutions, to say the least! I’ve learned as i have gone along and i know many things can be done in a more elegant way, but i think everything works.

I threw together a little song to demo it. I used Hub to split my 128 in three. 64 fingers is used for the percussion parts, Pages Clip Launcher for looping vocals and Daemon for everything else. I only use 6 of the 14 possible chords in the video, but just to give you an idea...

Oh, and sorry for the crappy video, all i have is a digital still camera...

  • beautiful song. like it a lot!

I'll try the app as soon as I get a chance.

  • from the video I understand that you're changing the root with your left hand yes?

If so I think that making that recordable would be a fantastic feature to implement.

Either way that song was fantastic. Reminded me a bit of Postal Service in style. Good work!

  • Awesome track!

Really dug it... app seems like a lot of fun... will have to check it out!

Have you thought about porting it to Max4Live with stretta's this instance?

  • beautiful song! I love the mood and vocals. I also like the way you used Pages and hub. Looking forward to checking out your app. I wouldn't worry about the patches being unorthodox. I felt the same way when I made my first app. It's like "is this how other people do this?" Hey, if it works - don't fix it.

  • cool app and video - nicely done

where did you take classes on Max?

  • Great video and great song. Lovely.

  • Thanks for the kind words all.

"from the video I understand that you're changing the root with your left hand yes?"

Yes...and no. The two bottom rows are chord buttons and can be setup to change root, voicing, chord extension etc.

    @ thealphanerd
no, no plans for m4l at the moment.

  • havaji,

tack for the app! if you're in stockholm and interested to meet up to monome sometime, please email me...

  • @jaygilligan

sorry, not in stockholm a whole lot, just went there for the class... but i'll keep you in mind if i do...

  • hi!

i like the idea of this app a lot. I tried it as quickly as i could. i think i have a problem, or maybe i'm missing the whole concept.
it doesn't play chords when i try it, it works like an arpeggiator, it doesn't play all the notes at the same time, but it play the notes of the chord one by one in a random order. is it normal?

    i'm on xp using a 128.
    thanks

  • @dirtysilver

That sounds about right. Each row only produces one note at time, if you have more than one note per chord and row, Daemon randomly plays one.

If you want more than one note at the same time you need to make sure that several rows are triggering at the same time, for example, try activating the first step on all the rows.

I set it up this way so that you could, if you wanted, get random voicings of the same chord. If you don't want randomness, just define one note per chord and row.

    Good luck!

  • @havaji, this seems really promising. However, I can't seem to get it to do anything. It seems like I'm taking all the right steps, turn on DAC, page 1 on monome, put notes down, hit start, make sure it's on sine waves...
But nothing seems to happen. Am I doing everything right?

  • @edwardloveall
so far so good... you can check to see if the creature is blinking, that means that notes are being created.

is the bottom right button blinking? in that case press one of the chord buttons (first seven buttons on last two rows) to "activate" a chord.

other than that it sounds like you're doing everything right...

  • Added to the wiki (after a few disastrous attempts, sorry).

    @edwardloveall
did you get it to work?

  • Yes I did. I dunno what my issue was.

Is there anyway to have all the columns sync up? I see the sync button but I guess it doesn't re-sync things as I expected. Anyway to make them all line up again after a tempo/division change?

  • Stopping and starting again will do the trick. No other way unfortunately...

  • really nice track man! its making me look forward to trying this out (in the next few mins) i'll let you know what i think of the app

  • Nice one!

(we from Sthlm should definitely meet)

  • I´m still in love with this app.

a m4l port would be the bomb, any chance? :)

    cheers, hr

  • I shall also add to the request, I opened a discussion here.

  • Oh...sorry... i don't have m4l...

  • I love this app. It is now my favorite of all time. I don't know if you could get a record feature for the chords so you could loop it and pick up a guitar. That would be really handy. Maybe getting some drums in the same style for the 64 users. But that aside it one of the best apps ever I can't wait to see what you might do next.

  • Also here is a video i recorded today. I'm interested in seeing how other people are setting up this app. In the vid i have phrigian for the top row and ionion in the same key on the bottom row. I'm now experimenting with putting the ninth in the top row. Enjoy the vid!

  • fantastic app just loaded it up and got it going with ableton controlling some synths. Thanks for your contribution, I especially like the eyes triggering :-)

  • Just found out about this app tonight--it kicks ass. It worked for me right away, no hiccups. I'm still sorting it all out, but thanks for your work. Outstanding!

  • Just did my first monome gig last night using daemon exclusively. At first people were a little confused by it but after the 2nd song I was getting a good response. I'm now considering building a band around it. Maybe do something with a percusionist and vocalist/guitarist. More for a accoustic chilled back feel.

So how has everyone chosen to set this app up? Are people using it the same way I am? I'm always up for more ideas as I delve deeper and deeper. At the momment I'm working more with a melodic minor chord base. The extensions make it sound a little weird but it also frees it up from the monotony of the triad. If people want to get some of my saves I am happy to e-mail you them.

I'm all set to play Invaloch Jazz festival this weekend with my trio. It's gonna be great fun. I even found a little space for deamon to come along.

  • sorry for bringin up this old thread.
just wanted to say, this is still my favourite app, just love what it does and it really works well. would love to see a 16 step and/or m4l version ;)

    thanks and cheers,
