Monome and Javascript in Max

  • I received my grayscale 64 this month and have been tinkering around in max taking other apps apart to see what makes them work and trying to put them back together again. While exploring a few simple ideas so far I've found that I pretty much always turn to the [js] object to organise everything. This has mostly just been triggering MIDI and messing with algorithmic generators; projects that don't involve using max signal objects yet. I'm no javascript expert but it makes dealing with certain things more intuitive and I don't fill my patch up with a thousand [route] and [sel] objects.

There's a few things which seem like they might be re-usable: making leds flash, recognising certain combinations of button presses etc. which I am including in a jsextensions file so they're available in all projects. Just a quick question to ask if anyone knows of any patches or applications that utilise javascript in max which might be worth a look. It doesn't really matter what they're intended to do. I'm more interested in looking inside to see how they do it.

something i started and never finished; i've been meaning to go back to this. feel free to abuse it. the actual js is the first i wrote. it's super basic.

  • Thanks to you both, I'm not a live user but I'll have a look at the guts to the clip launcher anyway. The life example is great, I've written one in pure max and one using [jit.conway] but this is definitely worth a look. I'm going to try and write one where you can set different life rules to see what sort of patterns can be produced and hopefully get some interesting results by mapping it to MIDI notes.
