Yes I've done it myself, no problem at all.

Can't seem to find that cap. Do I just use a different one with the same uf? Does the voltage in it matter? There're ones rated 5v,16v etc

Monome will sell you the cap with the USB plate, cheap.

anything higher than 220u would be fine. make sure you get 16v rating or higher.

the exact details don't matter at all - it's mostly to avoid adding power noise to your usb port (something that on modern computers isn't much of a consideration anyway)
